Oh my perfect show, you get better and better every week. You make me laugh, cry and scream with your plot twist endings, and naturally because of my emotions I scream at the sentiment of everything. Tonight the third episode aired and it was perfect so much was happening but it was a strong episode. It was funny, heartfelt and dropped a bombshell at the end. It was everything HIMYM used to be for most but still is for me. I'm sitting here thinking wow that was only episode three we still have so many more. But on the other hand WOW that was episode three of a FINAL season, ugh. Let's dive into this glorious episode in which not one single thing made me upset, which might be new.
What Worked:
- Everything was Barney and Robin and Nothing Else Hurt: These two I don't even know where to begin or how to continue. They are by far two of the most developed characters on the show, from where they were in the pilot to where they are now.. the character growth over eight years has been fantastic. I loved how they just acted engaged, it was fluffy and cute and sometimes I had to fan myself because it was getting real. The nicknames were precious but I caught myself laughing because in Bagpipes when they had the nicknames Barnstomer and Ro Ro, Ted was so mad because he knew Robin hated nicknames. Looks like she just hated his nicknames because she created R-Train and B-Nasty and nothing will ever be the same again. Their banter is what makes them work, the running ring bear gag will not get old, contrary to what I've seen on tumblr, it'll still be funny 5 episodes from now. It was so nice and reassuring to know that they were all in. This isn't a five year deal.. this is a sixty years and beyond, assuming their characters are between say 35 and 38 because Ted turned 30 in season 3 and Barney was already there. Barney and Robin plan on growing old together and still being hot for each other which keeps the shipper hearts going. I won't lie and say that some of the flash forwards in s7 and 8 had the fandom concerned with missing rings or Neil trying so hard to sit on his left hand and not make it look awkward. It was nice to know that the writers do not have any intentions of pulling the rug out from under us.. ((I hope)).
- Ted and Lily: One of the most underrated friendships on the show in my humble opinion along with Robin x Marshall as well as Barney x Lily.. but more on that later. Lily has always been the voice of reason she has always been the one who made Ted really think about what he wanted in life. They've had their differences but they are best friends. And the speech Lily gave to Ted had me in tears it was beautiful and also painful because you really see the journey of Ted and his heartache. A lot of people and I think I've said this before tear Ted down because of his on going feelings towards Robin.. which sure got redundant but you know the hero wins in the end. He has to go through all this stuff to truly find himself. The road is long but in the journey is the destination. The Ted and Lily scenes reminded me of late season one when Lily wanted to go off to San Francisco to be her own person and Ted convinced her to stay. Although she went she still came back and her and Marshall are now stronger than ever. It was just an amazing dynamic to see.
- Flashbacks: Episode 3 and we are finally seeing the bar and the apartment those quintessential pieces of the story that we have all been dying to see. I thought the flashbacks were hilarious and perfectly fit into the story line. Ted and the Empire State Building had me howling, as well as the graffiti art because as I was watching I was thinking: "I would do the same thing." When I first saw the Lily and Robin sneak peek, I had so many Duel feelings when Marshall and Ted were sword fighting and they stabbed Lily. I was so excited when they did a flashback to the scene from season 1, it was nostalgic to say the least.
- Marshall and Daphne: Last week I was bored and quite skeptical of the whole thing but this week I found so much humor in the roadtrip and working Daphne in conversations with Lily. And when Lily punished the die hard Vikings fan in Marshall and made him wear the Packers gear I thought I was going to fall out of my chair. It was great, I can't wait for Marshall to get back and mix in with the gang though. I miss Marshmallow and Lily pad.
- The Cliffhanger: Probably the best thing to happen to this episode or any episode really in a long time and let me tell you why. A fair warning that the Barney Stinson stan in me will come out *ahem* ... this cliffhanger was important and redeemed Something Old for probably every Barney Stinson fan. When Robin was on her whole "locket" quest and called Barney who was playing laser tag with his soon to be father in law, he seemed to busy for her. Which propped the Ted/Robin scene, which do not get me wrong was beautiful, I loved it maybe because a sliver of my heart will always ship the romance. But it made it seem like Barney did not care about her enough to stop what he was doing and go see her. Which if you have been watching since the beginning of the Barney/Robin relationship, you know this is not true. In 3x16 he comforted her when
Dawson LeerySimon broke up with her again and when he acted like a complete jerk in 5x17 he sent Robin on the super date instead. Even outside of Barney/Robin, he does so stupid stuff but he always tries to be there for his friends. So yes Something Old seemed very out of character, so when Barney blurts out in the last 30 seconds of the episode that he saw Robin and Ted in Central Park, I was like thank you Carter and Craig for sticking to plot and not swaying from who the character has become.
Favourite Quotes:
- "Sixty Years... man was the last time you think they had sex?" "Not since the Maple Leafs won the Cup.... 1967." - Barney and Robin ((the dig at my sad hockey team was perfect))
- "Say goodbye to the Empire State Building? .... Bro." "What sometimes I go... and talk to her about life." - Lily and Ted
- "You know what would prove that we are not some boring old married couple? Doing it somewhere we're not supposed to..." - Robin
- "I guess we could try the backdoor? ... Of our suite, our suit has a backdoor." - Robin
- "I almost killed my wife Ted, I almost killed my wife!" - Marshall
- "We are trying to do it somewhere naughty... that's not what I mean! That's never what I mean!" - Robin
- "Oh my... I found Waldo." - Robin
- "You wrote down all these things to say goodbye to but so many are good things, but why not say goodbye to all the bad things? Say goodbye to all the times you felt lost, to all the times it was a no instead of a yes, to all the scrapes and bruises... to all the heartache. Say goodbye to all the things you want to say goodbye to one last time." - Lily
It was a fantastic episode and maybe my favoruite of the season so far, although 9x02 had that Ted and the Mother scene so.. hmmm. Speaking of which, I kind of missed Cristin's face. The mother really does not fit into the storyline yet until maybe the Saturday of the wedding which is the rehearsal dinner. But we shall see, I am so excited for this season to continue.
