How I Met Your Mother: Coming Back Recap

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT

It was so amazing to receive two episodes this week, on one hand yay! Sixty minutes of quality television, on the other hand boooo there's only twenty two episodes left. Until we all cry our eyes out and someone tweets a kick starter link for a movie or spin off. I give it like six months after the series finale, and if I don't see it I will start it myself. With only fifty four hours until the wedding almost everyone out of the core five almost six has made it to the beautiful Farhampton Inn. Here's another breakdown of what worked, didn't really work and what quotes and moments made us go awwwwwwh.

What We Loved:

  1. Good Ol' Minnesota Marshall: It's no surprise that Marshall is one of the sweetest gentlemen to ever grace our television screens. He is extremely nice to everyone around him unlike New Yorker s, and if you didn't know he wasn't from Minnesota,  he could have been the Canadian one, am I right? By not wanting to sabotage Daphne the universe sends Marshall a blessing and that blessing is Herm and he is AWESOME. After almost refusing to drive the monstorsity due to his environmental backgroud, he hands the keys over to Daphne who swears she will purchase Marvin a car seat and return. While the audience yells out Marshall no, Marshall Eriksen fashion he puts his faith in Daphne to return with the car. And boy did I ever clap when she did.

  2. Drunky Lily: We've experience drunk Lily before, so it was great to bring her back. The running gag with Linus brought on the laughs and her sexual comments about Marshall kept the comedic energy going. She was 100% done with everyone at the table and in that moment, I could relate to a dozen situations in which I felt the exact same. When she dropped the bomb about James I was certainly nervous about how Barney would react but more on that later.

  3. The Return of James Stinson: As a huge Wayne Brady fan having him back as James was perfection. I was however worried about the divorce secret and how Barney would react but we'll get to that. Neil and James play off each other well and I think they make great brothers. They make you believe they grew up with each other and know everything about one another. They have a great connection and it comes out on screen.

  4. The Character Development of Barney Stinson: Barney has had the biggest character growth out of all the characters, everyone knows this or at least they should. In the first few seasons the audience always wondered why did Ted even keep him around? In the beginning of the show Barney was a womanizer and the idea of commitment and marriage was a joke to him. He believed he would end up alone or be the next Hugh Hefner. His relationship with Robin was the first time he had fallen in love in years and it terrified him and that's why it didn't work at the beginning their egos were too large to learn to compromise because they hadn't grown up yet. After reverting to his hold ways and dating women in between, the constant push and pull with Robin was always there. He later found Quinn. After that didn't work he truly believed he would never trust anyone again. Until Robin entered his life again. Sure he made some mistakes in season 8 but he made up for them with grand gestures. He proved to Robin that he was a changed man and a one woman kind of guy. Barney is 100% all in and it's because of Robin that he believes in true love. His character should not be overlooked or disregarded because he has grown up, his character should be rewarded.

  5. Ted and the Mother: I've watched this episode twice and could not see my computer screen both times because I was honestly crying so hard. Our first flash forward scene between these two characters was everything I day dreamed about this summer. A lot of people were nervous about how Josh and Cristin would connect and some people were outraged about the casting choice. And by some people I mean the like 2% of people who probably changed their minds when this episode aired. When we got the behind the scenes Entertainment Weekly photo-shoot and Josh placed a tender kiss on Cristin's head, I knew that they would bring perfection to their characters. Their chemistry was explosive, they are individually two of the cutest people in the entire world so together it's just too much. We know that they are dating and return to the Farhampton Inn exactly one year later to the day. I am so excited to see more interaction between the two of them. I know it's called How I Met Your Mother and it was originally just supposed to end with them meeting, as a hopeless romantic and investor in fictional relationships, I'm so happy the show changed their minds.
What We Didn't Exactly Love
  1. The Bro-Stinson Flashback: There have been some crazy flashbacks throughout the show from the early 1900's displaying history. My personal favoruites being: The Sexless Inn Keeper and The Bro Code. They were short, funny and to the point. This one felt awkward to me like I understood the curse and why it related to the story line but I wasn't a fan. Also the guitars through me off but I realized Barney has an exaggerated mind.
