Ahhhh the lovely sounds of my incoherent sobs could only mean one thing....PARENTHOOD IS BACK. And what a wonderful thing it is! Now I (Jenna) started this fantastically glorious show last year, so I am a new hoodrat (that's the fandom name..how awesome is that?!) But boy am I glad I found it! Let me just say, if you aren't watching this show just go right ahead and punch yourself in the face, then go start it and thank me later :) Parenthood has everything you could ever want from a TV show. Everything. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll relate, you'll cry, you'll love every character, oh did I mention you'll cry? Yeah this show is notoriously known for getting your emotions in a choke hold causing all of America to collectively weep together. And it's wonderful.
Thursday marked the season 5 premiere (on a new date/time) after about an 8 month hiatus so let's chat about it shall we?
1. Crosby/Jasmine/Jabbar & new baby Braverman!: We left off in season 4 with the craziest of the Braverman clan finding out he's going to be a Dad for the 2nd time! The episode begins with Jasmines water breaking 3 weeks early and the couple is extremely unprepared. A little while later, a new addition to the Braverman clan was born. Their story this episode was the most comedic. They dove into the stuggles that ensue when a new baby comes into the picture. The overbearing family, lack of sleep, and Crosby was dealing with a lack of connection to his new little girl. Not to mention they hadn't thought of a name for her yet! I thought this whole thing was hilarious and very fun to watch! They didn't glorify having a baby by any means, and I like that they went the realistic route! In the end after much discussion of first names and possibly hyphenated last names, they decided on Aida Braverman. (sounds like I eat a Braverman tbh...I'm not a fan lol). But this is going to be so much fun to watch play out the rest of the season! Loved that we got our first big Braverman family scene too!
2. Sarah/Amber/Drew: Sarah finally has her own plaaaace!! Praise! Homegirl was sleeping on her parents pull out couch for 4 years. Now she's a super in an apartment building! Go girl! Mama Sarah is having trouble with Drew's lack of communication now that he's in college and she goes to Amber for to vent. This was SO cute, and I was cracking up with her trying to figure out how to Emoji! Curious to find out how/when she finds out Hank is back in town! (TEAM MARK!). But let's talk about probably the most important part of the episode. Amber and Ryan thoooooo. I was tear free all episode until that God forsaken proposal! I ship the shit out of Ryber and I'm so happy about this! But I am also a bit concerned. He struggled last season with PTSD sooo I'm wondering where he's at with that. But I'm also still squealing!
3. Adam/Kristina/Max/Nora: My sweet precious little famillllyyyyy. It's no secret they're my favorite Bravermans. I just love everything about this family! They were at the center of the season last year with Kristina battling breast cancer (and Monica Potter giving one the BEST acting performances of last year.) After facing her own mortality, it seems that Kristina has an entirely new outlook on life. "Carpe Diem" was definitely the motto this episode, and I have a feeling it's going carry them throughout the rest of season 5. Opportunity to put "Carpe Diem" into action came knocking when Bob Little showed up, asking Kristina to help him with his campaign to run for Mayor. But instead of taking him up on it, she decided she's going to run for Mayor herself! Which I am absolutely okay with! I'd vote for her for President of the United States tbqh! But Adam is concerned she's jumping into something so major too quickly. While I understand Adam's concern, I love that Kristina just wants to live every moment and not hold back. Which shows such great character growth. The old Kristina would not have taken this risk. This is the start of a very interesting story line! I think we're going to see Kristina tested in many ways and see if she can actually "sieze the day" like she wants to. I'm sure it's going to take Adam some time to get on board with everything as well. As for Max, I absolutely love his budding friendship with Hank. Both are just hilarious together and Max & Ray have great chemistry. I'm glad the writers decided to explore that. And don't even get me started on sweet precious little Nora! She's just the cutest little nugget on TV. I love getting to see her grow up right before our eyes!
4. Joel/Julia/Sydney/Victor: It seems they really settled in well together and are now in a good groove! Which was great to see. But not sure it's going to last :-/ Seems stormy clouds are ahead for the Grahams. They didn't really dive into much this first episode, but it's clear Julia is struggling with still not having a job. And Joel getting this 2 year construction project is definitely not going to help things. (not to mention this lady "Pete"....) I love that Joel is always putting Julia first. He's such a sweet heart and doesn't want to be insensitive to Julia's struggle, but also knows he needs to take this job in order to support his family. I am VERY glad they are giving him something to do this season. I love that we get to see a little bit more of who Joel is. (Which is utterly perfect tbh!)
- "I'm sure someday you're gonna be the best thing that ever happened to me but right now I really hate you." -Crosby
- "A ha! Headin' on down to funky town? The Braverman testosterone is potent and wonderful thing. Gotta keep that fire in the loins son! It's like a rock & roll song, like the stones! FIRE IN THE LOINS!" -Zeek
- "I'm just in it for the sugar." - Max
- Adam: "He tried to get her to play with his blocks!" Kristina: "He didn't get the blocks in...the holes...I can't make the metaphor work." - Kristina
- "Isn't it fun that I live in the neighborhood now? You can show me how to Emoji things!" - Sarah
All in all I absolutely loved the first episode!!! I'm so happy we get to spend 22 episodes with the Bravermans. Not sure how I feel about this new date/time. I know the ratings probably won't be very good against Scandal & Greys but my loyalty is, and always will be, with Parenthood :) Hope you guys enjoyed the episode as much as I did!
