SPOILER ALERT: TURN BACK NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT.
My week of television kicked off with a bang and I have never been more satisfied by a premiere of a long running television show in my life, so kudos to the writers. How I Met Your Mother delighted the long time fans of nine years or the short time fans of eight months like myself with hilarious and heart warming television. Let's talk about what we loved, didn't exactly love and breakdown the best quotes and moments that made us go awwwwww. I can guarentee you that 83% of those moments will be Barney Stinson adjacent (see what I did there).
As a Barney and Robin shipper if the title of this episode hasn't had you squirming in your computer chair since we found out in July, you are lying to yourself. At the end of 8.24 we know that Ted unknowingly had the Locket this entire time and wants to give it back to Robin as the perfect wedding gift. Lily Aldrin, the voice of the Swarkles fandom pleas Ted to be careful. With 55 hours until the wedding each of the six important members in this story are headed to the Farhampton. They all encounter some hills to get over before they get there.
What We Loved:
- The Ted and Lily road trip: Theodore is honestly the biggest dork in the world and his diabolical plan to drive Lily crazy and make her take the train was genius and a great segway to meet the mother.
- Everything Barney and Robin: If you follow me on twitter you know where my heart lies and these two are everything. When the sneak peeks came out a few weeks ago the entire incest thing had everyone thrown for a loop, we tried to keep come and not believe it. Given Carter and Craig's GOT obsession I knew there would be a reference to it. It was great comedy, Neil and Cobie were fantastic, playing off of each other with the faces and the noises. The telepathic conversation in which they plotted to kill Ranjit was great. When they discovered they weren't blood related and shared some tender moments in the cab it was, everything we had ever wanted. My entire timeline was either going awwwwwwh or typing with joy in explicit caps or both.
- The Mother Is EVERYTHING: We finally got her on our screens for more than 30 seconds and she was delightful. Cristin Milioti displayed instantly why she was the perfect actress to play Ted's wife. We learned a lot about in her in only a short amount of time which was great. She is as big of a nerd or maybe even a bigger nerd than Ted, only time will tell. She is extremely nice and loving towards strangers and makes some banging cookies. Her interaction with Lily brought us great joy as well, as Ted's best girl friend I think it was important for them to unknowingly interact first. Considering Lily likes to break Ted and his women up, the mother already has scored some cool points with Lily and the audience.
- The Canadian Gags: As a Canadian I think I find the digs to be the funniest things on the show because 83% of the time they pick the most ridiculous stereotypes and exaggerate them, and I literally laugh every time. (We did have one good episode back in s1). Plot twist of this episode was finding out Peculiar Jacques is Robin's Uncle.
- Ranjit: Literally my favourite secondary character ever, he never fails to make me laugh with his pulling over lines his pervy comments. Shout-out to the writers for the continuity with the divider in the car.
- Ted's Gift: One of the most heartfelt moments in the episode for me was when Ted gave Robin the photograph. I'm not sure if it's because I realized they'd all been friends for eight years and had come so far or that I could have been watching this for eight years, and have missed out. Nonetheless I cried like a baby, so thank you writers for that. This was also Ted's way of saying he was letting go, or so I thought.
What We Didn't Exactly Love
- Marshall and Daphne: I thought all the stuff on the plane was extremely funny and them getting kicked off of the plane. But for me it went on for too long? And considering how long it takes to drive from Minnesota to New York I fear that it will go on for a lot longer. I won't judge to harshly, Jason Segel could lean against a wall and i'd still watch because I love him that much.
- Barney and Robin and the Kids Conversation: Or rather lack there of ... so we know Robin can't have kids which makes me sad but I'll learn to deal with it. But in the car Robin said to Barney "Well we know we can't have kids..." and Barney said "Well if we did.." Right at that moment I was like they haven't had the conversation yet. A part of me is glad because I want to see it emotionally played out on my screen. I still have chills from Cobie in season 7 when she breaks down in Ted's arms after the whole Christmas lights scene. So if I can get the conversation to happen so I can see Cobie nail it that's what I want. The other part of me is like shouldn't they have talked about this last season? I mean they got engaged in 8x12 so watching it live there was 12 episodes for that conversation to come up. So yeah it needs to happen. If Carter and Craig are somehow reading this the last show I was invested in One Tree Hill pulled a miraculous child birth out of thin air when the character was told two seasons before she would never bare children. I could be down with this, I'm just saying.
- Ted Heads To LA: Oh Theodore Evelyn Mosby what are you trying to do to me. I love Ted so much but he frustrates me to no end but I think it's because we know his endgame and he doesn't so it makes sense to get frustrated when he does dumb things. Realizing that these dumb things lead him to meeting the love of his life calms the anger. I was SO happy that he gave Robin the picture instead of tracking down the locket until dun dun dunnnnn they flashbacked to four days earlier and he had gotten on a plane to LA. Which by the way, mistake me if I'm wrong but didn't he only find out about the locket the day before he left New York for Farhampton? When did he have time to fly to LA?
