If you have not seen this episode yet I do not even know what you are doing here. MAJOR SPOILERS TURN BACK NOW. *grabs paper bag* This episode you guys, I don't even know if I am going to make it through this recap without becoming emotional. But here we go the Lighthouse, brace yourselves people it's going to be an emotional review.
At the end of last week Marshall had finally told Lily the truth which opened up the floor for WWIII and Lily was beyond pissed off, thank god for Linus. A few weeks back Robin and Loretta came head to head in the battle for Barney's affection leaving him in a tough spot in the middle of his soon-to-be wife and his mother. And then there's Ted oh sweet Theodore, having terrible luck finding a date to this wedding he just says screw it and hits up Cassie again... ("You chose poorly"). Let's dive in and talk about this episode.
Clint & Virginia: I was SO happy to see Ted's parents back, I LOVE Clint and Virginia so I definitely squealed when they showed up. Clint showing up the back of the Hummer was great. I love how Ted and his family try their best to make everything right. It was great filler comedy to have them change the beat from the dramatic tone this episode had underlying as it got down to the last half of the show.
Robin & Loretta: If you go back to my recap of 9x05 you may remember that I was less than amused about the fight and disagreement going on between Robin and Loretta. When the press release for this episode came out and we learned they were still fighting I was quite skeptical again, but damn didn't it all work out. What started off as a hilarious banter and scramble egg war; turned dramatic and painful so fast. Loretta questioning what Robin would cook for the children she could never have, struck the hearts of fans everywhere. What I caught while watching a second time was that the egg ordeal seemed to be a metaphor for what Loretta and Robin could and could not do. Loretta could make eggs / have children and Robin could not. It was emotional to say the least. Upon finding out FROM Barney that Robin could not have kids AND that Robin's mom was not coming to the wedding everything seemed so sad. Until, Robin and Loretta buried the hatchet with an emotional hug and one of the first heartfelt mother/daughter scenes.
Barney & Robin: These two... it's no surprise who I am here for above everything else. So this episode hit me like a ton of bricks. After THE SCENE happened I think my heart stopped for a few seconds, I also cried the hardest over these two since the proposal back in S8. The discussion EVERY Barney and Robin fan was waiting to happen, happened and it was so perfect. I don't even know where to begin. From the beginning we know Robin didn't want kids, Barney never seemed to concerned either. At Tom and James wedding there were signs that he would have been a cute father when he held that baby during the reception. When Barney thought he and Robin were pregnant in S7 he was extremely excited and started playing house with Ted. When the results came out that she wasn't pregnant, he was relieved and so was Robin. But finding out she could never have kids crushed Robin, she tells her "future kids" that their "father" would've probably try to bend over backwards to make her laugh and smile. Robin tells Barney last out of the core group a year laterr. For Ted and Kevin, not having kids was always a deal breaker so I think that Robin didn't want to disappoint Barney or have him walk out of her life forever so she stalled it a bit. Robin tells him so casually thinking that he won't even notice it or that they will just continue to walk and not discuss it. Barney was so concerned and sad you could see it written all over his face he just stops her and hugs her. Let's talk about a lot of meaningful things in their relationship happen while they are casually out walking together. Like 5x01 when they confirm the relationship and walk hand-in-hand for brunch, the S6 finale when they run into Nora and Robin realizes she still loves him, 7x09 when they kiss in the rain and the whole cheating situation and heartache goes down. The almost kiss after Barney declares he's "in love" with Robin and the drunk kiss after their night out. It's become canon that important things between them happen on the streets of New York and you won't ever here me complaining about it. What's the real kicker here is that in the fall of 2012, Barney and Robin weren't even together yet so that's what hurts the most. And when you think about it in the scheme of things. Barney proposed to Robin knowing she couldn't have kids because unlike the other men in her life it wasn't a deal breaker for him. He isn't marrying her to have her kids, he is marrying her to spend the rest of their lives together, and that's all that matters.
Robin... in general: Finally someone writes a Robin heavy episode.. because she is my favourite character this is extremely biased but at this point you should not be surprised. It's always great to get Robin's point of view on things, to see how she reacts and deals with things thrown at her. And what started off as light hearted banter, turned cold then sad really fast. We learned more about Robin's mother which I thought was GREAT, the only upsetting part was that Robin's mother is not coming because she is afraid to fly. I'm hoping that someone forces her to come because I think even though Robin and her mother didn't really get along, it's her daughter's wedding and it's got to mean something. Let me give a special shout out to Cobie because she nailed everything thrown at her in this episode, and if you heart didn't shatter when she broke down in Loretta's arms, then you must have a heart of stone. Someone give me a call when this girl gets recognition for how diverse of an actress she can be. She is so underrated and it's killing me.
Ted & The Mother: Oh Theodore, I love you so dearly. Every time I see him I'm just like she's on her way, she's on her way. You will NOT be miserable much longer. The difficult part about the season being on one weekend all of Ted's unfortunate moments during the weekend take weeks to overcome while we watch it live. Like Ted is only having 2.5 bad days but for us it seems like he's having 12 weeks worth of bad days, so I have to remind myself to think long term. As his misfortune with Cassie continues, Lily gives Ted a life talk as always. (A+ Ted and Lily material this season). Flash forward two years and Ted brings the RIGHT girl to the Lighthouse. And the tears started flowing when he drops down on one knee, it's like this weight is lifted from your shoulders. You know right from the pilot that Ted wins in the end but it's so refreshing to see it happen. And this scene was perfect and one of the best proposal's on the show. Someone asked me yesterday if I thought Ted's speech should have been longer and more drawn out to display more emotion. I disagreed because for one it kept with the pattern of the other proposals not being long and elaborate in the speeches. I think the subtlety of it all made it so beautiful. Josh and Cristin click so well together, definitely the best chemistry Ted has ever had with a girl on this show. I just loved everything about this scene and I love everything about the two of them. Now for something to think about, exactly two years from the wedding would have been May 2015 and in the Trilogy episode back in S7, we learned that their first child was born in 2015. So is it safe to assume Ted got the house then baby and then the wife? His out of order declaration from 8x24 came through. You go Theodore.

This episode was one of the best of the season, I still hold 9x02 very close to my heart. This episode felt like classic HIMYM, in which it had the ability to make you laugh but still tear your heart into little pieces which is what I love. This show is unique in which you enjoy laughing but you care deeply about the emotions of everyone. So let's all give props to Rachel Axler for being a kickass writer and taking our emotions for a ride. How did you feel about tonight's episode? Hit up the comment box and share your feelings.
Hello hi there, first time commenter long time reader, I'm a big fan. lol seriously though it helps that we have most of the same opinions about this show, cause ya I'm in total agreement with all this/ I enjoy reading your writing anyway SO YA ok moving on...
ReplyDeleteA to the men to this being the best episode since the premiere. I kinda feel like the pattern of this season will be a strong episode then like 5 or so filler ones then another strong one... at first I was mad about that but then realized that us fans need to acknowledge that not that much can honestly be happening in the span of like 2.5 days so I've made peace that not all the episodes are gonna be like this one... but have faith that there will be multiple just as good if not better than this one. Like honestly I'm confident that the season/series finale will be one of the best episodes of the entire series. (though it'll also be the saddest of our lives BUT LETS NOT FOCUS ON THAT RIGHT NOW)
Ohhhh good catch on the egg metaphor I didn't realize that but it's so true. The way the fight ended between Robin and Loretta with her being there for her as a mother figure made me really emotional. Especially to think about the first time Loretta was on the show in S4's "The Stinsons" (forget the ep number right now and too lazy to check lol).. and at the end of that ep when she tells Barney to not be like her, and to take a chance at love if/when he find's somebody worth it. And then at that moment Robin opens the door and tells Barney their cab is here LIKE FUCK SWEET SYMMETRY how now Robin's about to be Barney's wife partly thanks to Loretta's advice to her son. :')
ReplyDeleteOK BEFORE GETTING INTO MY OTP GOODNESS can i point something out k did anyone else notice how Cassie trips on that toy police car on the stairs and falls thus hurting her ankle and Ted having to piggy back ride her up to the lighthouse?! K WELL I realized that in 9x05 there was a seemingly pointless scene at the time of Lily trying to talk to Marshall on the phone (about like Ted not giving them a wedding gift or wtv) while sitting on the stairs but there's a kid behind her playing with the car and she tells him to shut up and the kid runs away LEAVING THE CAR THERE. and then for the rest of that ep/ all the next ones leading up to this one you can still see the police car on the step!
I just thought that was a cool little continuity point the writers put in there that might've been overlooked..
Also I dunno if this connects at all but like when Loretta/Robin are about to start their "scramble off" a waitor comes up behind them and is like "OMG SOMEONE GO WATCH OUT FOR THE COPS"then barney makes a weird face and is like "maybe we shoulda read up on this town before booking our wedding"... lik that probably has nothing to do with it but the kids toy was a police car.. i dunno i think im grasping at straws LOL so nvm...(also my grammar is getting worse and worse as this comment goes on sorry)
But ya ok the swarkles storyline melted my heart and i was so happy we FINALLY got to see barneys reaction to robins infertility. The writers totally delivered and i think they satisfied all our shipper hearts. just the fact that they werent even together at the time (though i do think by the fall of 2012 barney had also started to acknowledge he still had feelings for robin, aka had started his final play of "the robin") but anyway ya im so glad they wrote it that he found out before he proposed because it just proved all the more that hed be fine without kids all he needed was robin.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree cobie nailed this episode, like she always finds the perfect balance in a scene and can be funny but also emotional when need be and i really admire that in her. JACOBA FOR ALL THE AWARDS.
also ya i find it hard to believe her mother isnt gonna come to her wedding... maybe this is just a mislead..? i dunno but i hope she does come.. or if not i at least hope her sister and dad come since we have seen them before.
I have nothing more too add to your Ted/Mother paragraph, it's spot on... I SOUND BRITISH its spot on old chap... ok im going insane youll be able to detect my insanity growing throughout this comment and i hope it makes you laugh...
Oh but yes to their timeline like maybe is it possible the mother was pregnant when he proposes she just hasnt told him yet? i dunno but ya i guess maybe this will be a shot gun wedding haha... eiher way though i dont really mind cause we know theyre meant to be so it all works out.
i dunno how to wrap up this spam of a comment so uh...... SEE YA ON THE FLIP SIDE BYE
